About The Event

Joseph Cornell was an innovative mid-20th Century artist known for his shadow box assemblages. Born in Nyack, he spent his adult life at 37-08 Utopia Parkway in Flushing, caring for his widowed mother and disabled brother. Cornell was a self-taught artist who had no formal training. His studio was his basement where he built, painted and glass fronted boxes and created other various forms of collage and assemblage from found objects.
What to expect: In this BHS workshop led by artist and Creative Arts Therapist Betsy Lazarus, you will learn more about the life and art of Joseph Cornell. Further exploring the creative process, participants will design a shadow box from assorted objects into a work of art both unique and personally meaningful. You are encouraged to bring objects both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional of your own to include in your piece along with frames and other decorative supplies that will be provided. No artistic experience is required for this program!
Betsy Lazarus has been facilitating art groups for over 25 years. She is an artist and NYS licensed Creative Arts Therapist. Her psychotherapy private practice, Therapy+Creativity, is located in the heart of Bay Terrace, Queens where she helps people of all ages and abilities put more color into their lives.
