Queens, New York, has a rich history filled with numerous impressive houses that have not received much publicity. These homes, ranging from farmsteads to mansions, seaside retreats, and architecturally significant community dwellings, were once owned by various notable figures including America's forefathers, nouveau riche industrialists, Wall Street tycoons, and prominent African American entertainers of the Jazz Age. The borough also has a musical legacy, with famous artists like Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, James Brown, Ella Fitzgerald, and Lena Horne having roots in Queens. The book Historic Houses of Queens delves into these remarkable residences through over 200 photographs, exploring their architecture, former owners, surrounding communities, unique features, and the varied fates of some that disappeared due to financial troubles or fires.
About the author: Rob MacKay is a longtime, award-winning community journalist who currently works for the Queens Economic Development Corporation. He authored Historic Houses of Queens and Famous People of Queens, and also operates various social media channels that promote local restaurants, shops, and tourism attractions.
